EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane, usually black, that has been covering flat roofs in the United States since the 1960s. Very little roofing material has that much real-world track record.
Its strengths. Outstanding flexibility across temperature extremes — it stays pliable when a Tennessee cold snap makes other materials brittle — excellent resistance to UV and ozone, and simple, well-understood repairs. A damaged EPDM roof can usually be patched cleanly decades into its life.
Its trade-off. Black membrane absorbs heat rather than reflecting it, so on a conditioned building with heavy summer cooling load, TPO often wins on energy. Seams are adhesive- or tape-bonded rather than welded, which makes seam quality and surface preparation critical.
EPDM remains our recommendation for many re-roofs, buildings with significant thermal movement, and owners who value a repair-friendly, thoroughly proven system over the newest option.

Metal roof vs. architectural shingles — which is better?
Both are excellent when installed right; they solve different problems.
Architectural shingles (like GAF Timberline HDZ) cost roughly half as much installed, look right on most Middle Tennessee homes, install in a day, and carry outstanding warranties. For most homeowners, they're the sweet spot.
Standing-seam metal costs significantly more up front but lasts 40–60 years, sheds storms beautifully, and can lower cooling bills. It makes the most sense if this is your forever home, or on farmhouse/modern styles where the look is the point.
We install both, so you'll get a straight comparison for your specific house instead of a pitch for whatever we happen to sell.
What warranty comes with a new GAF roof?
Two layers of protection:
- Materials: GAF shingles carry a Lifetime limited warranty on the shingles themselves when installed as part of a qualifying system.
- Workmanship: Because we're a GAF Master Elite contractor, we can register enhanced system warranties up to the Golden Pledge® Warranty — which includes up to 25 years of workmanship coverage inspected and backed by GAF directly.
That second layer is the one most homeowners never get. A typical contractor's "workmanship warranty" is only as good as the company behind it; a Golden Pledge is honored by GAF even if the installing contractor is gone. We register every eligible warranty and hand you the paperwork before we're done.
